June 2011 Story of Hope - Blanket

As I was approaching the date of my surgery, the gift of friendship gave me enormous hope.  My friend, Catherine, coordinated our friends and knit a cancer blanket.  Each square was knit by a friend and represented something special.  So much was going to depend on what was found at the surgery.  Would this be invasive cancer? Would it be in my lymph nodes?  With the impending surgery, Catherine blanketed me with love.  I was lucky.  Surgery removed the cancer.  As I recovered from the mastectomy surgery and later reconstruction surgery, the blanket continued to wrap me in hope.  I can think of this day and glow with memories.  Catherine and I are only 36 years old.  I don't worry about cancer in the future because my friend continues to give me hope and I have years to return the hope she gives me.  -Rebecca
