10 years, $1 million milestones for Hope Chest for Breast Cancer
The Hope Chest for Breast Cancer Foundation is celebrating its 10- year anniversary in 2011 and has reached a milestone of providing $1,000,000 in support to more than 2,000 breast cancer patients and their families in the Twin Cities.
"We are so honored to provide support to many families over the last 10 years to help them through their breast cancer journey," said Barbara Hensley, founder and CEO of the Hope Chest for Breast Cancer. "Our ability to do this is possible only through the fantastic support we have received from our financial donors, volunteers, media partners, and donors of items to the retail stores, shoppers and everyone who shares the story of the Hope Chest. They have all played a critical part in helping the Hope Chest reach this amazing milestone and I am grateful for their support!"
The Hope Chest awarded $140,000 in grants for 2011 to provide support through emergency assistance programs to patients as they go through their breast cancer journey. The following organizations received grants to provide emergency assistance for rent, utilities, transportation and other needs to individuals who are having financial difficulties or are unable to work due to the side effects of breast cancer treatment: The Frauenshuh Cancer Center, Hennepin County Medical Center Foundation, Regions Hospital Breast Health Center, Ridgeview Foundation, and University of Minnesota Cancer Center.
Open Arms of Minnesota received a grant to provide Delivered Meals that Heal for women and their families so they can get the essential nourishment that their bodies need during treatment. Hope Chest Breast Center of North Memorial received a grant for early detection education and screening for women with a focus on diverse populations.
"The partnerships we have formed over the years are essential in making sure men and women get the help that they need," said Hensley. "Our guiding philosophy is to ensure that our funding is disbursed in our community to provide the most effective support to those directly touched by breast cancer at a time when they need hope."

Each month our newsletter will feature a story off what gave hope to an individual going through a breast cancer journey as illistrated in our 2011 Year of Hope Calendar

February 2011 Story of Hope - Faith
Fear and anxiety can easily become part of the cancer experience. My faith in God has given me hope during this uncertain time. I remember how God has brought me through difficult times in the past. I believe that He as power over all things, even cancer. He made me and loves me. I take comfort in God's promises to guide protect, and strengthen me. My friends have also given me hope along this cancer journey. I've received meals, groceries, and encouraging cards from so many. Friends keep me company during chemotherapy treatments. Coworkers have donated vacation time. My new friends from the breast cancer support group help me maintain perspective and a sense of humor. Their suggestions and resources have been invaluable. These past seven months of treatment have been challenging. But I've been able to walk this journey with hope due to my faith and caring friends. - Mary Ellen
